To Treat or Not to Treat?

Please help us with our window treatments.

We are going with a 2 1/2" wood blind in cream for the majority of our windows (holds up best in the AZ sun/heat). We thought we'd splurge on the master, family and nook ... but now we aren't so sure and are contemplating doing all wood blinds and later softening the look with drape panels in the master and family (perhaps living/dining too).

Part of the issue is that our window is not encased in wood trim; it only has a wood ledge on the sill. We don't know if the woven wood blinds will "pop" without a trimmed window. But if we go with the wood blind, we get a 5" valance outside-mounted. Along with the ledge and panels, we could fool you into believing the windows are trimmed.

Let's take a look at the options:
Exhibit A: Family room
This window is 12' wide by 6' tall. With this size of window, I'm afraid this woven wood selection would overwhelm the space. I think a monochromatic choice would be better or cream blinds with drape panels to dress it up.
Exhibit B: Nook
Here you can see the finished product - has ledge but no trim. Here's a very bland woven wood swatch intended to complement the paint color (pictured left). Better off with wood blinds?
Exhibit C: Living and Hallway
The living room is set back from the patio. Light will come in, but with the northern exposure, I'm not so sure the sun will do so. This is a 14' wide window.

The windows in triplicate are the hallways windows looking out to the front door courtyard. We are unsure if the sun will be an issue in the courtyard, but perhaps for privacy ...

Now, you may be asking yourself why all of the fuss? First of all, we can roll this expense into our 30-year mortgage by purchasing at this time. Secondly, we get 28% off as a part of our deal. Do we just deck it out, within reason? Or wait and evaluate the sun, heat and privacy once we're moved in?

So, please post your comments.

Kerry,
Your creativity never ceases to amaze me. I feel unworthy to even comment on your blogo er, no, not blogoyevich I mean your blog. My thoughts in the north facing space (family?) is maybe you should have something like you had in your town home which I copied in our house now? That way they could be completely out of the way to enjoy your gorgeously huge window. No, you say. I'm wondering how many different blinds you'd need to hang and if that would be a distraction? I agree with the colored blinds, might be too much if you decide to go the blind route. I'm forgeting which way your living room faces...you could leave the one naked that doesn't look out onto anything, but then again, when you dance naked in your house you may want some blinds! I agree with the privacy blinds for the hallway. I like the woven neutral blinds for the nook. I'll try call you after I work this afternoon to get more details. It's -17 right now. Bet you are happy you are in AZ!

I know I spelled Blogo's full name wrong and as I re-read my message I also forgot another "t" in forgetting. Just so you know, I know.

i like that your windows only have the ledge! i did actually vote but i'm undecided. you know i don't like to put my opinions on anyone least they did what i said and regret it later. i don't want to get blamed. yes, i am pretty much a chicken. i do like variety though but it is what you and derek like now isn't it? and here i sit in my house and some of my windows have been bare for quite awhile now since i can't decide what to put on them. so i'm not a good one to ask. hmmmm, who do you get your indecisiveness from kelly? love, mommydearest
